Learning co-operative opens for the elderly

U3A wishes to promote improvement in the quality of life for its members.

A new U3A branch – a learning co-operative for the elderly – has recently been opened on the West Rand where the founders wish to involve all retired members of the community.

“U3A West Rand is a non-profit association of mature persons in partial or complete retirement,” said Marthie Coetzer, one of the founders of U3A.

U3A’s objectives are to provide intellectually stimulating programmes of learning and social contacts arising therefrom. They also deliver these programmes through a voluntary, self-help community in which all members enjoy equal status. U3A wishes to also promote improvement in the quality of life for its members.

U3A also wants to demonstrate that intellectual capacity can be maintained well into the third age,” Coetzer said.

There are currently about 51 members and meetings take place on every second Tuesday of each month at 9.30am for 10am at the Ruimsig Retirement Village.

Two of the founders, Janet van der Merwe and Griet Wessels, hails from Randfontein.
