Traffic officer arrested for bribe

The officer allegedly demanded a bribe of R100 from the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit.

A Randfontein traffic police officer was arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe from an undercover member of the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit for speeding.

Kenny Mampondo, Randfontein Traffic Chief confirmed the incident took place in Randfontein on Saturday.

“I am aware of the situation.

I can confirm that the officer is a Randfontein Traffic Officer employed by the Randfontein Local Municipality (RLM),” he said.

According to Simon Zwane, Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the officer was operating a speed trap when he stopped the undercover member. Zwane said the officer allegedly demanded a bribe of R100 before the Hawks were called in and the officer was arrested. R4 000 allegedly was found in the officer’s possession.

The officer is expected to appear before the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court today.
