Two arrested after car chase, shootout

Police put their lives on the line to take two suspects off the street.

A car chase and shootout following a business robbery in Westonaria ended in the arrest of two suspects.

According to Seargent Audrey Sefara, acting spokesperson for the Westonaria Police, the incident took place last Friday.

“There was a lookout for a white Quantum and white Avanza that had robbed a store called CAN in Carletonville. Two police officers from Westonaria were driving on the R28 when they spotted the Quantum and tried to stop it but it drove away,” Sefara said.

The Quantum sped off and took the Simunye extension 5 turn-off but the police were on their heels. The vehicle then stopped and the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire at police. The officers retaliated before the suspects fled on foot into an open veld, running off into different directions.

“The officers chased them and caught one suspect and they took him back to the vehicle where they recovered two firearms and huge bags containing property.

“The suspect was arrested and was taken to the Westonaria Police Station along with the vehicle in which later laptops, cellphones and tablets were found.”

Two firearms were discovered in the vehicle, one of which had its serial number filed off as well as 16 live rounds. The Avanza also was found by the two brave officers in Venterspost next to the Golf Club where another suspect was apprehended as well.

The docket has since been transferred to the Carletonville Police as the crime was committed in the Carletonville area.

Station commander for the Westonaria Police, Colonel Selvan Moonsamy applauded all the members involved in the arrest and to keep up the good work.
