‘I will kill you if you go to the police’

"He then got me up against the wall, his hands around my neck." - victim.

A woman in her 20s, whose place of residence cannot be disclosed to protect her identity, is living in fear after the protection order she applied for allegedly was denied.

The woman, who the Herald will refer to as Anne, explained she had a relationship of about six years with a man who we will refer to as Jack. They had a child together.

Anne’s sister explained to the Herald about the incidents that allegedly led to her applying for a protection order.

She said, “Anne and Jack’s relationship ended about two years ago. There have been several incidents of abuse. Since my sister always has been fearful of Jack, she never reported these incidents. Jack told her he would kill her if she goes to the police.”

Anne’s sister recalled one of the worst incidents being when Jack took Anne to a family restaurant and allegedly hit her with a pipe in the bushes. He also had hung a rope over a wall and allegedly told her she should end her life if everything was too much for her.

She said, “He seems obsessed with my sister. He watches her, knows about her whereabouts and sends her messages even though he has a girlfriend with whom he stays. Every time my phone rings, I fear it is my sister in distress.”

The latest incident allegedly happened one morning in January.

In a document in the Herald’s possession, Anne wrote, “Jack entered my complex unlawfully at around 7.15 one morning. After being refused entry, he tried to gain access through the balcony. Our seven-year-old child was at home, watching television. His attempt to gain entry failed and he started swearing at me and getting violent. He then bent the safety gate with his hands and kicked open the door. On gaining entry, Jack then hurt our son and pushed me onto the couch. He then started assaulting my boyfriend.”

In her statement Anne said, “He then got me up against the wall, his hands around my neck.”

Anne also stated, “My brother and boyfriend both got injured during this incident.”

On the day they opened three cases against Jack, and Anne also applied for a protection order against him.

Anne’s sister said, “Jack and his girlfriend also use Cat and this fuels his aggressive behaviour. After the protection order was denied on 10 March, he left the court with a big grin. All Jack did was apologise for his actions and said he is moving to Rustenburg. The court stated he poses no threat to Anne.”

Anne’s sister since has laid a complaint at the Regional Office of the Justice Department in Pretoria. The Herald is awaiting a response from the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court regarding this case.
