Sewage unbearable for family

Family member: The smell is unbearable.

Elizabeth Tlomo, 72, and her family from de la Bat Street in Westonaria has been living with a sewage dilemma in the back of her yard for almost eight months.

Tlomo claims that on 17 July 2015, the Westonaria Local Municipality dug a hole in her backyard to drain sewage from.

Since then, they never attempted to build a proper manhole or attempted to even cover this potentially dangerous area. Tlomo and her husband used sink plates to cover the hole as they have grandchildren living with them.

“We can’t clean our yard nor attempt to grow vegetables as we planned to do.

The worst part is the smell and the unhygienic conditions we have to live in.

“Since they dug the hole, they have drained it three times but only after we informed them that the hole is full of water and sewerage. The smell is unbearable,” Tlomo said.

Comment from the Westonaria Local Municipality still is awaited.
