Municipality brings poetry to the people

A look at what the Randfontein Local Municipality was up to on Human Rights Day.

The Randfontein Local Municipality hosted an event with the theme “Racism, Xenophobia stops with me” to contribute to Human Rights Day at the IEC Hall on Monday.

The municipality organised the event where the Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, delivered a powerful welcoming message. Several poems about racism and xenophobia also were passionately performed.

Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo said, “Randfontein can not sit in isolation of being part of the African continent.

This initiative is not a political rally, it is about content and creativity which is part of poetry.

“Poetry is very close to the Randfontein Local Municipality’s heart.”

Reverend Chidozie Edjimadu from the Haven of Compassion also delivered a poem on social issues affecting the African continent for instance homelessness.

Caroline Setsiba from the Randfontein Local Municipality, programme director and organiser of the event said, “The purpose of this event is to bring awareness amongst ourselves about diversity of our country. It is important for the youth to know the negative effects on racism and xenophobia.

When things are good or bad in society, it is the poets or writers that will either celebrate or mourn the occasion.”

Messages of support came from Deborah Fraser, a popular gospel singer. John Sunny-Unachukwu and Didi Oguguo also delivered messages of support.

The pupils that performed poems were Donald Moipolai, Bridgette Ngakane, Monthati Pulumoetsoeu, Siyamthanda Mkhaliphi and Khanyisile Mkhaliphi.

Belita André, daughter of famous writer Frank Times, also performed a poem.

Belita Andre delivered one of the poems.
