No clinic for two years

Resident: They give us container crèches but we need a clinic.

A concerned resident of Zenzele spoke out about the state of affairs concerning health services and employment opportunities in the informal settlement.

Maimane Motshabi has been a resident of the Zenzele informal settlement since 1998 and he said he has had it with the poor service delivery in the area.

“The municipality comes here and gives us container crèches, but we need a clinic. There are around 10 crèches in the area, but no clinic,” he said.

He explains the Zenzele Clinic was burned down two years ago during a service delivery protest and it has not been rebuilt since.

We have a councillor but it seems like he is not doing his job because we haven’t had a clinic in a long time.

“Our elderly have to walk to Mohlakeng as it is the nearest clinic. It’s dangerous and people die on the way. It’s too far to walk,” Motshabi said.

With regard to the container crèche, he said there are many unemployed residents in the area and he feels it needs to be taken into consideration when looking at who will man these projects. The containers were erected in February, but he said it is unclear when the project will take off.

“We want all the people with their own early development centres (ECDs) in Zenzele to come and work in the containers so they can benefit and then the municipality can focus on building a clinic. Right now we don’t know who will work in these containers.”

Motshabi said there previously also was an EDC container, but the people employed to work there were not from Zenzele.

“They came here to work but didn’t live here. The people of Zenzele need to benefit fully from these projects or else it’s pointless,” he said.
