UPDATE: Brutal family massacre condemned

'More needs to be done across the board regarding rural safety.'

Marius Redelinghuys, the DA Shadow Deputy Minister of Police, issued a statement in which he condemns the brutal murder of an entire family at a Randfontein farm in Rodora, Doornfontein this week.

“The DA extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of those murdered on this senseless crime,” Redelinghuys said.

This horrific incident again demonstrates the urgency to act on enhancing rural safety across the country and in the North-Western parts of Gauteng specifically,” he said.

Redelinghuys explained that the Randfontein Police station has been identified as a rural-urban mix station and therefore already has the rural safety strategy implemented.

“This shows in the commendable intensive and speedy efforts of the Randfontein Police in investigating this incident.”

He, however, added that even so, more needs to be done across the board regarding rural safety.

Redelinghuys will subsequently write to the Minister of Police, Nathi Nhleko to request specialised rural reaction units to be put in place all over the country’s rural areas and that timelines are to be given to establish the roll out thereof.

As he worked it out, it would mean at least five rural reaction units of approximately 20 members each.

“This must be done urgently and decisively,” he said.
