30th Show draws record crowd

Show coordinator: We would like thank everyone for their participation.

This year’s 30th Randfontein Show is said to be the biggest yet.

“The weather was kind to us this year and on Saturday, 5 March attendance figures broke previous records with over 18 000 people visiting the grounds,” said Marcelle Mans, Show coordinator.

Marcelle added they have received great feedback from exhibitors and members of the public about the variety of entertainment on offer (on five stages), the advertising campaign and the happy and fun carnival vibe that was created.

“People from all over the West Rand and neighbouring towns visited the Show and it seems this event has also become an annual pilgrimage for so many people who used to live in Randfontein.

“Friends and family catch up on old times at what is known as “Die Lekkerste Kuierskou”.

We are proud that this big event has evolved to become the biggest business and social extravaganza on the West Rand.”

“We would like thank everyone for their participation – from the local and district municipalities and police, to the visitors, exhibitors, artists, sponsors, cleaners, casual labourers and last but not least, the extremely hard working and dedicated Show committee members, who put in extremely long hours.

“Without their passion and commitment, this Show would not be possible,” Marcelle said.

Theuns Jordaan’s performance on late Saturday afternoon was the top crowd puller as far as artists go, with Karen Zoid a close second. The spectacular laser shows on Friday and Saturday night were a big hit with show visitors and the new Randfontein Show Bag Jump was a also a huge success with those who braved heights ranging from three to eleven metres.

“Snotkop told the crowd in the show marquee that singing with the Laerskool Randfontein choir gave him goose-bumps and that it’s times like this that make his singing career worthwhile,” says Marcelle.

“Another special moment was when veteran Anneli van Rooyen received a standing ovation when she appeared as a guest artist on stage with Karen Zoid.”

The annual Cheerleading and Pom Pom Competition, has got to be the mostly hotly contested competition at the Randfontein Show, also drew a bumper crowd.

The vibe and atmosphere was palpable and Hoerskool Jan Viljoen took the title for the fifth year in a row. Cici and her dancers also attracted a large crowd at the Coca Cola stage and another firm favourite was the WWP Wrestling in the Coca Cola arena.

Other memorable events included the Pitts Special Aerobatic Display, the Boerboel Competition, K9 Search and Rescue dog shows, Jimmy’s

Steakhouse Sauces Celeb Braai Pie Competition, Transvaal Scottish Pipes and Drums and the hugely popular Women’s World Day of Prayer.

Every day a fresh show birthday cake that measured one metre by one metre was brought up on to stage and the audience, committee members, stage manager and artists sang “Happy Birthday”. The cake was cut up into squares and members of the public were invited to help themselves to a piece of the birthday cake.

“A very special moment was on Sunday morning when the Show committee members all gathered together to commemorate 30 years of success and we released 30 pink balloons into the air,” says Marcelle.

“Each balloon had a special thank you message in it and a request to whom ever found the balloon to call the Show office to let them know where the balloon was found.”

After the balloons were released, the committee all took hands and gave a prayer of thanks.
