R’fontein Mayor’s shoe campaign

In February, 2 870 pairs of shoes were received and distributed to schools.

The Executive Mayor of the Randfontein Local Municipality, Councillor Mzi Khumalo, has embarked on a school shoes campaign to assist pupils who are in need of shoes.

Khumalo approached the Lillian Dube National School Shoes Project which has committed to contributing towards the Mayor’s Education project in Randfontein.

The shoes were to be delivered between December 2015 and January 2016. The Office of the Executive Mayor identified five beneficiary schools.

In February, 2 870 pairs of shoes were received and distributed to the following schools Lukhanyo Senior Secondary School (500 pairs); Phaundulwazi Primary School (870 pairs); Setholela Primary School which is a semi-rural school (500 pairs); Mohlakano Primary School (500 pairs) and Bulelani Primary School (500 pairs).

When visiting the schools recently for the distribution of these gifts, Khumalo was received with great enthusiasm by pupils, staff and School Governing Bodies.

In addressing the pupils the Mayor indicated that government is committed to improving education through, among others, addressing challenges that might hamper effective learning.

“It is a fact that some pupils from particularly disadvantaged communities are faced with different socio-economic challenges.

Some pupils still come to school barefoot without shoes, not by choice.

“But such partnership initiatives will assist in alleviating these challenges and will help in motivating these pupils to have hope of a better future,” Khumalo said.

The Executive Mayor also encouraged members of the community and businesses to show their support to this campaign by continuing to donate more shoes and uniforms. The campaign has made an impact as more calls for support have been received.

To participate, shoes and uniforms can be dropped at the Randfontein Municipality Mayor’s Office.
