R’fontein’s Mrs SA contestant conned by hawker

Phone worth R1 000 turns out to be a dud.

Elain Erasmus, Randfontein’s Mrs South Africa semi-finalist recently was tricked by scamsters.

The incident took place in Krugersdorp West and Erasmus would like to warn residents about buying goods from hawkers and to be absolutely sure when buying something.

While it has been a good few weeks for Erasmus who recently was chosen as part of the Mrs South Africa top 100, her lucky streak ended when she dropped her phone by accident and in a bid to quickly replace it, she was tricked by a hawker con-man on Tuesday morning, 8 March.

I dropped my phone and panicked because what do you do without a phone? It’s a necessity. A man then approached me, he had a bag of cellphones and asked if I didn’t want to buy one from him for R1 500,” she said.

Erasmus added she bargained with the hawker and managed to get the phone for R1 000 instead.

“I went to the ATM to draw the money and he gave me the phone.”

She explained when she went home she could not switch the phone on.

“I took it to the place where I had my old phone in repairs and the man told me the phone was a demo. When he showed me the phone, it worked.

“He even took a photo with the phone but I think in the time I went to draw money from the ATM, he switched the phone out.”
