Pantsula dancing with the stars

Pantsula group proves you can dance with just about anything.

The pantsula dance group sensation, Dlala Mapantsula from Mohlakeng bring the streets to the stage and they make it look good.

Dlala Mapantsula is made up of Mongezi Combo, Sello Motshaba, Pule Lekhutle and Neo Sepotokele (choreographer).

The group most recently performed at the Randfontein Show and executed their dance quickly and in perfect sync.

“When we were dancing now, that wasn’t even fast.

That beat wasn’t close to being fast for us. When we practice, we move much faster,” he said.

The dance was no average one as they took to the stage with crates and uniquely incorporated them into their dance, lifting them, moving them around and skillfully dancing on top of them.

Sello added it was their first year performing at the Randfontein Show and they hope to perform next year as well but hopefully at the main stage.

The Randfontein Show is not the only big platform the group has been performing at, they also have danced at various theaters across Gauteng including the State Theater.

They were given a spot on the South African dance show, Step Up or Step Out as well.

The group has been dancing together for the past nine years and Sello says they come up with their dances together although they do have a choreographer.

“What Neo does is the choreography. If we want to do a dance say with crates then we (the rest of the team) go an research how people move when they dance like this,” he said.

The Herald asked the group how they came up with the crate dance.

Where we come from, you know, the township, we dance pantsula.

“The places where they sell beer there are sometimes dancers who use anything they can to dance with,”

The group not only dances with crates but they have also incorporated paint cans and walking sticks into their dances as well as brooms.
