‘Beauty is humanity’

Randfontein executive mayor: Investors can only invest in a town that is clean.

Toekomsrus recently was visited by Lebogang Maile, MEC of economic development, environment, agriculture and rural development for a clean-up-cum-economic-project.

Various officials from the Randfontein Local Municipality as well as the West Rand District Municipality attended the event dubbed as Bontle ke Botho which translates to Beauty is Humanity.

The project focuses on creating a cleaner and greener Gauteng and in the process, creating jobs and opportunities for economic investment in townships as well as the greater Randfontein.

Waste is a huge economy. It can create jobs,” Maile said.

Randfontein executive mayor, Mzi Khumalo added, “Investors can only invest in a town that is clean.”

The project is being carried out throughout Gauteng and 104 areas still need to be visited. “If we carry on with such initiatives, in no time Gauteng will be a cleaner province. Our motto is reduce, reuse, and recycle,” Maile said.

In an interview with Maile he told the Herald, “For the whole Gauteng we are looking at cleaning cadets, more indigenous fruit trees to be planted, recycling, and food gardens. All these things should help combat poverty,” he said.

With regard to these projects, Maile said the some of the projects such as the fruit trees and food gardens need to be subsidised by government.

We will have to subsidise it but, you know, government doesn’t have budget for this so we’re looking at working with the private sector,” he said.

The municipal officials and residents were then released after the brief introduction of the project and went out in four teams to clean Toekomsrus as well as plant trees.
