Teacher’s vehicle targeted while giving reading classes

Resident catches suspected car thief.

Fed up with crime, a resident took matters into his own hands and chased after and apprehended a suspected car thief.

The brave resident, Franco van Deventer, who also was robbed last week, said he was driving along Market Street on Tuesday afternoon when he spotted a suspicious man sitting next to a Mazda, fiddling with the vehicle.

After passing the suspect, he reversed his car and the suspect reached for bricks to throw at his vehicle. When the suspect failed to do so, he tried running away and Van Deventer gave chase.

The suspect then jumped over Laerskool Rapportryer’s wall and Van Deventer shouted for help. Two garden service workers assisted him and caught the suspect after which Van Deventer notified the police.

Jacqueline du Plooy, owner of the Mazda said she was giving reading classes at Shalom After Care when residents called her, informing her of what was happening. When she got outside the suspect already was apprehended. The suspect was handed over to the Randfontein Police.

The Herald awaits official comment from the police.
