‘Coaches as important as priests’

'An athlete can't develop on his or her own without a coach.'

West Rand coaches from various sporting codes recently attended a coaching seminar at the West Rand District Municipality.

The seminar was organised by the West Rand Sports Confederation along with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and University of Johannesburg (UJ) Department of Sport and Movement Studies staff members Chris Fortuin, Lynn van Rooy and Rian Lombard.

In his presentation, Chris elaborated on the role of the coach in developing sports people from grassroots level to high-performance athleticism.

The seminar could not have come at a better time for coaches mostly from disadvantaged communities who have to balance their societal challenges ranging from crime to substance abuse and poverty.

Don’t undermine your strength as coach, you are just as important as a priest.

“An athlete can’t develop on his or her own without a coach,” Chris said.

“It was indeed a fruitful exercise for us as coaches on development level, especially from the townships.

“We have gained such valuable knowledge on how broad and scientific coaching has become in modern-day sports,” said Thandeka Qhamwula from the Bekkersdal Rock Stars Netball Club.
