Pageant queen, 16, tells her story

'Enjoy it because pageantry is fun, the moment it stops being fun, it becomes a routine.'

Beloved Sechele, a 16-year-old eloquent pageant queen from Homelake has her head in the right place to go places with her beautiful talent.

Beloved is in Grade 10 and goes to Hoërskool Riebeeckrand.

She has been in the industry for 12 years and plans to tackle Miss South Africa and Miss World and has various achievements and awards behind her name.

Big achievements to date include:

  • Miss pre-teen South Africa 1st princess (2012)
  • Miss pre-teen Africa (2012)
  • Miss pre-teen Universe (2012)
  • Top 3 in Miss Gauteng (2014)
  • Miss Mogale City 2nd princess (2014)

Beloved is currently participating in Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa. She is a semi-finalist at this point in the competition.

How she started pageantry and modelling was when she still attended Laerskool Randfontein (Ram).

“We had a school concert and one of my teachers at the time called my mother and told her she should let me go for modelling classes. I used to do ballet around that time.

My mom took me for a few modelling classes and told me I have to choose. I chose modelling at that point and that developed into pageantry,” Beloved said.

Beloved also enjoys dancing – she is a pom-pom at Riebeeck – drama, art and public speaking. Her favourite pageant queen at this point is Roelien Strauss.

“I like her not only because she won Miss World but because she persevered. When she won, it was her second time doing the competition. She didn’t make it the first time but she took some time and worked on herself and then she won.”

Beloved said pageants are time consuming and she will try to keep them up as long as she can but she also has other dreams.

“I’d like to be an actress. I like drama and law which is quite a weird combination.

“In five years I see myself as a student. I mean, of course I want to go on to win Miss South Africa and Miss Universe but I need a back up plan for afterwards.”

For girls who would like to pursue pageantry, Beloved gave the following advice.

Know yourself. You can’t go into this thing wandering or you’ll get lost in it.

“Enjoy it because pageantry is fun, the moment it stops being fun, it becomes a routine. Also, love yourself because you will see prettier girls out there,” she said.
