Bomb scare at Village Square Mall

Second bomb scare at Absa in Village Square Mall in a little over a year.

Authorities were yet again alerted about a bomb threat at Absa bank in Village Square Mall on Monday.

Chris Mafuya, an eyewitness told the Herald he was standing outside the mall when he saw a woman running out of Absa, screaming.

I was standing at the entrance next to Absa and I saw this woman. She shouted and ran away then went back. She said something about a bomb. The workers also walked out afterwards,” Mafuya said.

When the Herald got to the scene, the safety tape around the bank was being taken off and people seemed to be going about their business as usual. Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed the threat but could not supply any further details as yet.

Comment is still awaited from Village Square Mall management on the matter.

This would make for the third bomb threat at the mall in just a little over a year and the sixth since 2013 the Herald has reported on.

Last year on 23 January Absa had a similar bomb threat which Byron Kennedy, Barclays Africa Group spokesperson said would be investigated. The second scare last year was in October at Checkers. This scare, however, was called unfounded by the Randfontein Police.
