Rem athletes reach Gauteng West Champs

Three Rem athletes will represent the school at the Gauteng West Athletics Championships.

Randfontein Primary School (Rem) recently made headlines after coming out on top during a Circle A Athletics meet.

The school’s athletes received 30 gold, 33 silver and 25 bronze medals for their efforts.

Rem athletes then went on to participate in the sub-district Athletics Championships held at Laerskool Randfontein (Ram) and again did not disappoint as they bagged seven gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals. 57 athletes from Rem held the school’s name high and gave their all to reach the next level. Of the 57 athletes who participated, 19 went through to the Gauteng West Athletics Championships and six of the 19 received medals.

One of the school’s U/8s, Msize Mosenye, won gold in the 80 metre sprint and silver in the 60 metre sprint at the Gauteng West meeting. Msize would have been eligible to go through to the next round of the championships but the competition for his age group ends at the sub-district level.

When the Herald spoke to Msize he said he is going to participate again next year and is looking forward to the competitions because he will be old enough to go to the next round.

In their newsletter the school congratulated Msize as well as all the other athletes who participated for their achievements.

Three of the six athletes who received medals will represent the school at the Gauteng Athletics Championships to be held on 26 and 27 February.

Athletes through to Gauteng Athletics Championships:

• Joel Banacini – received silver in the U/10 long jump

• Michael Banacini – received gold in the U/13 high jump

• Mikhile Hendricks – received silver in the U/11 high jump
