Arola Cycle Tour coming through

The vision of the Arola Tour is to sponsor 2 500 Bibles and to reach out to the community.

At least 21 cyclists will be facing 483km in just three days for the annual Arola Cycle Tour to be held from 18 to 20 February between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein.

The tour spans over eleven municipalities, including Randfontein, with involvement from the Gauteng Traffic Police, JMPD, Fairlands Police, ARS Medical Services, Florida Fire Brigade and countless support vehicles, water points and technical back-up.

This tour started 14 years ago to raise funds for Bible distribution and was originally held between Parys and Boemfontein. Two years ago cyclists from the Mosaïek Community decided to add an extra stage from Johannesburg to Parys, giving them the opportunity to join 100 riders from the other regions ending in a ceremony at the Bible Society in Bloemfontein.

As a first ever, Cape Town based road and track specialist as well as Springbok cyclist Wimpie van der Merwe, joins the riders on this year’s tour. He is a former multiple world cycling champion and record holder.

The vision of the Arola Tour is to sponsor 2 500 Bibles and to reach out to the community and plans for a much needed upgrade of the recreation area of the Florida Fire Brigade include painting, vinyl floors, new furniture and catering supplies.

“In order to plan a tour of this scope, we have a team of dedicated volunteers managing every aspect of this event. We are in need of sponsorship towards the 2 500 bibles as well as corporate companies to get involved in the operational costs of the tour,” said Christo Prins, tour organiser.

The Randfontein community can expect these cyclist to be passing through Randfontein on the R28 on Thursday, 18 February anytime from 7.30am onwards.
