Old Age home treated to Valentine’s Day celebration

Community members and a local church showed Mohlakeng's elderly that they, too, are loved.

Elderly people from the Mohlakeng Old Age Home recently were treated to gifts, entertainment and a church service for Valentine’s Day.

Organisers Tshidi Phetoe, Mandla Hamea and Neo Pietersen saw a need at the old age home and wanted to make a difference in the lives of the now-forgotten Mohlakeng elderly.

I visited here not long ago. My grandmother Pauline Phetoe is a resident here and I just thought these people don’t do anything – they must be bored,” said Tshidi.

Christ Harvesters Ministry’s youth attended the event to do the church service and also to bring song to the otherwise quiet atmosphere of the old age home. Mudau Pfunzo and Bakang Gabonnwe opened the meeting up in prayer and sang gospel songs. Later, Bakang treated the elderly with a preach. His main message was that God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son for all who believes in him not to perish.

Abasindiswa, a Mohlakeng-based choir used their voices to uplift the elderly. Their voices were well received by the elderly so much so that they sang along to the songs they knew.

Once all the formalities were completed, organisers opened the floor for some of the elderly to dance. Children who attended the event then had a chance to innocently judge who the best dancer was. Monica Dlamini won the competition.

A mister and missus Valentine competition was held which children judged as well. Boniswa Mnyekama won the title of Mrs Valentine and Solomon Tshailane received the title of Mr Valentine.

Residents of the old age home were then given a gift bag packed full of toiletries as well as cakes and cupcakes donated by the community.
