Police show children their soft side

Preschoolers were given a tour of the Westonaria Police Station.

The Westonaria Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit took preschoolers on a tour of the station to learn about the men and women in blue but also to prevent them from ending up on the wrong side of the bars.

The tour was held last Thursday.

Preschoolers of ages four and five from Philani Development Centre were accompanied by their preschool teachers and Sergeant Audrey Sefara.

After a brief introduction of what a police station is and what officers at the station do, the preschoolers went to the station commander’s office.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy spoke to the children in the good old police fashion and jokingly asked who smokes and who drinks. To everyone’s surprise, one preschooler who didn’t exactly understand what Moonsamy meant put up his hand and said he did.

After the laughs at his office, they were taken to the Community Service Centre (CSC) where Audrey explained to them how the CSC works.

The final and definitely most entertaining stop for the preschoolers was a trip to the police parking lot to have a look at one of the cars. Audrey unexpectedly turned on the siren causing the preschoolers first to jump with surprise and then burst out laughing.

Warrant Officer James Patrick Tladi who is in charge of firearm licensing at the police station stopped by and shook almost every preschooler’s hand.

He pointed to the firearm on his hip and asked the preschoolers if they know what’s holstered on his hip. All the children knew what a gun was and Tladi explained to them that if they ever see a gun, they should report it to police. He even had them repeat the police number, 10 111.

To end off the day off, the preschoolers did a dance for the social crime prevention unit to say thank you.
