For the love of soccer

The players of both these teams are retired professional sportsman.

Antonio de Freitas, 44, and Johnny dos Ramos, 46, both Randfontein United Football Club players shared their vision for the sport to grow in Randfontein.

Antonio plans to get the younger-generation soccer players more involved with the club and in Randfontein itself.

He also aims for a soccer academy where they can get a professional coach for junior players, who in turn can pass down the knowledge to their children’s generation.

Originally, the Randfontein Football Club was founded by Manny Pereira. Three years ago, Antonio took over as chairperson. Antonio explained that the club has two teams, Randfontein United and Randfontein City.

Randfontein United players live in Randfontein while Randfontein City players are former residents who still want to play in Randfontein.

The players of both these teams are retired professional sportsmen.

Antonio himself was a professional rugby player, but now tries his hand, successfully, at soccer. Both teams are doing extremely well. The Randfontein City team came third in the third division Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) League, while Randfontein United came second in the fourth division. The Randfontein United team also went through to the Gauteng Cup and has reached the semi finals.

This football club uses their own members as coaches, seeing that most of them used to coaches before. Every Wednesday evening they practise at the Greenhills stadium until late at night. They practise right through the year.

Ben Morgenrood, who is keen on boosting sport in Randfontein, is their sponsor.
