Police station to close? R’fontein reacts

Jacques Julius: It is unacceptable that our community is not safe at all times.

The DA Randfontein and Westonaria caucuses took to the streets of Toekomsrus last Friday to picket with placards in protest of what they call the random on and off closure of the Toekomsrus police station.

DA members also called out to motorists passing by to blow their horns in solidarity with the DA mandate to protest against the police station closing at random times.

According to DA councillor for Ward 8, Jetta Beaufort, the police station closes on weekends and other random times and no explanation is given to the community of Toekomsrus.

On weekends when people want to report something to the police they have to walk all the way to the Randfontein police station. How is that fair? Why is there a police station here in the first place then?,” said Beaufort.

Jacques Julius, DA MP and constituency head for Westonaria and Toekomsrus said the police minister promised him orally that he will see the police station is opened.

“It opened but is still randomly closed without reasons given to the community. I again put a question for oral reply to the police minister on the operation and functionality of police stations on the whole of the West Rand,” said Julius.

He added the minister will answer his questions orally on Tuesday, 23 February.

We also will petition the acting police commissioner on the random closure of our police station in Toekomsrus. Our residents have a right to a safe neighbourhood,” said Julius.

The DA demands that the Toekomsrus police station to be fully operational and open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They feel the high crime rate and drug trafficking in the area is perpetuated by a non-functioning police station.

“It is unacceptable that our community is not safe at all times,” said Julius.
