Five must watch movies on Valentine’s Day

Why spend money on a Valentine's gift when you have romantic films gathering dust in your home.

It’s that time of year again where your heart pumps custard for your significant other and all you want to do is the most couple-y thing you can find.

Instead of giving in to the expensive pressures of buying cards, flowers and nibbles, why not treat your significant other to a movie day?

Movie day being the operative word because everyone knows there are not as many hours at night as there are movies you want to watch without dozing off.

Here is the Herald‘s list of top six indie films you can treat your significant other to on a low budget this Valentine’s Day.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

“Okay, fine. I had to fight a guy to be with her, okay? I fought a crazy, 80-foot-tall purple-suited dude, and I had to fight 96 guys to get to him. He was flying and shooting lightning bolts from his eyes, okay?” Is just one of the alternatively romantic lines in the video-game themed film.

Juno

“Paulie Bleeker is totally boss. He’s the cheese to my macaroni.” Juno tells her boyfriend Paulie at the time. The story is about a pregnant teenage girl whose relationship with her friend becomes compromised after he impregnates her. While the story line seems heavy for a love story, it is definitely one of the most unexpectedly romantic cult films out there.

Corpse Bride

Yet another one of Tim Burton’s classics about a man who mistakenly marries a corpse and fights with all his might to get back to the land of the living to marry his fiancé.

Romeo + Juliet

Baz Lurhmann just knew how when he made this rendition of Shakespear’s Romeo and Juliet. The movie is set in more modern times and brings a new twist to an old classic.

Before Sunrise

Now this addition to the list might not be as alternative as the rest but as far as romance goes, it is possibly the most soppy movie next to The Notebook. In After Sunset which is the first of the series, two travelling strangers meet in a foreign country and instantly fall in love making parting difficult of them when they have to move on to their destination.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

This film is great for Valentine’s Day and also great if your significant other loves indie music. Norah meets Nic by chance while trying to find the band Where’s Fluff. As chance has it, Nic is looking for the same band and the two fall hopelessly in love with each other after a cray night of mishaps.
