UPDATE: Truck driver hijacked, tied up

The recovered cargo was handed back to the original owner.

After a trucker was hijacked on the R28 near Pelzvale on 3 February, the vehicle and trailers were recovered in Hillside. Some of the cargo was found in an open field behind Mohlakeng Extension 11.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said, “On Wednesday 3 February at about 4.30pm a 50-year-old driver of a truck carrying grain was hijacked on the R28 near Pelzvale, Randfontein. It is alleged that the victim was travelling from Westonaria towards Randfontein when he noticed something wrong with the two trailers. He pulled over and inspected the trailers. He allegedly was accosted by two unknown males who, without reason, started assaulting him.

“He allegedly was forced back into the truck and something was placed over his head. The suspects drove off with him and instructed him to assist in offloading the cargo. He refused and was beaten again. The suspects dropped him off after the load had been offloaded.”

The victim received medical care. The recovered cargo was handed back to the original owner. The SAPS Provincial Investigating Unit are investigating this case. Any information can be communicated to the SAPS toll free number.
