Pothole problem persists

Municipality says it is on their to-do list.

Emsie Nicholson is at her wits end due to the many potholes in Willem Street – the street just around the corner from her house.

Nicholson said due to this ongoing problem, she is but one of many in Randfontein who have suffered extensive damage to her vehicle’s wheels and rims.

The Herald investigated and found six potholes in just one section of Willem Street. When it is dark this becomes a real nightmare as it is impossible to drive around it. Nicholson added these potholes have been a problem for a very long time and could cause accidents.

Filling the pothole with sand does not solve the problem, it is just a temporary measure,” she said.

Potholes have become a major concern not only for the residents of Randfontein, but also for the rest of the country. The Herald continuously receives complaints about the financial burden these potholes are placing on motorists.

Another resident, who wishes not to be named, said his job requires him to be on the roads around Randfontein day and night and he simply cannot afford fixing his wheels and mags anymore.

The Herald turned to the Randfontein Local Municipality for answers, where Tshidiso Thlaripe, their spokesperson said, “The municipality has entered into an intensive process of rehabilitating the streets of Randfontein.

“This process was informed by an observation made by Mzi Khumalo, the Executive Mayor, when he took the responsibility in March 2015. Since then, a comprehensive roll-out of rehabilitation of roads has been under way. We will in no time also attend to Willem Street.”
