Sibanye Gold – one dead, one critical

Spokesperson: These two miners entered the restricted area to mine illegally.

One of two workers were killed following an illegal mining operation at Sibanye Gold’s Cooke 1 mine in Westonaria on Wednesday.

The Herald confirmed with Sibanye Gold spokesperson, James Wellsted that both were contractors and they entered the unused area illegally. It is said they had been trapped since Monday.

Both miners have been brought to the surface. One was airlifted to hospital where he was stabilised but is still in a critical condition. The other miner unfortunately passed away due to his injuries,” Wellsted told the Herald on Thursday morning.

“These two miners entered the restricted area to mine illegally. Illegal mining is a major problem for South African mines. It occurs daily,” Wellsted said.
