R’fontein boxing to reach higher heights

Randgate boxers have no time to fall out of shape.

The Randgate Boxing Club started 2016 with a bang and the boxers are training harder than ever for upcoming tournaments, tours and championships.

The Herald recently paid the club a visit while fitness training was in session. Boxers were drilled to get and stay in the best shape.

Willie Gonzalves, head coach said with all they have going on this year, there is no time to be unfit. The club already has started with their activities; in fact, it seems they never stopped.

Willie has taken his boxers to various areas to compete and train. In the near future, he and some of them will be off to Port Elizabeth to represent the town.

One of the club’s sought-after boxers, Hardus Jacobs is well on his way to being the next best thing in boxing. Hardus is in the Gauteng Academy Team and should this young star make it through to the SA boxing championships with a gold medal, his place in the team to go to Russia will be reserved. Willie said Hardus stands a good chance to box overseas this year.

Hardus is not the only outstanding boxer as various other boxers in the club already have been to the SA championships and have walked away with gold. In April last year, Demorne van der Walt got gold in the youth category, Nicole Calitz walked away with silver in the junior category, Hardus finished with silver for the juniors and so did Amorie Gonsalves.

Amorie and Nicole also represent Randfontein in the Gauteng Academy Team.

Not only the club’s boxers are aiming high. Three of their coaches also have bragging rights. Fanie de Bruin and Nekita Keyser recently passed their club coaching courses.

Willie took his qualification further and passed his international AIBA star course, which means he is just three courses away from knowing all there is to know about coaching boxers.
