West Rand’s fairy tale matric awards

A top school and an underdog in the West Rand managed to rake in the most certificates and trophies at the awards.

There was plenty to celebrate following the annual and prestigious West Rand District Top Achievers Awards held at Mount Usambara just outside Krugersdorp last Friday.

Randfontein and Westonaria schools held the name of their towns high.

Nomcebo Gumpo from Thuto Lehakwe Secondary School came in the top position. The school also received an award for being the best performing school in the Mohlakeng, Bekersdal, and Toekomsrus area. Hoërskool Jan Viljoen (Jannas) received an award for achieving a 100 percent pass rate which the school poured blood sweat and tears into.

Randfontein High School (RHS) also received their award for getting a 100 percent pass rate for a whopping eight years in a row. Hoërskool Riebeeckrand recieved an award for being position 91 in the top 100 schools in Gauteng. RHS also represented and came in position 61.

Hoërskool Noordheuwel raked in most of the awards. For nearly every category the school was called upon to receive their certificates and trophies. The school received almost so many awards that organisers might as well have made a table for the school on stage and just read out which categories they won.

Noordheuwel wasn’t the only school that had a bag full of awards at the end of the night as Thuto Kitso Comprehensive School raked in their fair share of the limelight. The school falls in area three which is that Kokosi, Wedela, Khutsong area in the district. The school also received an award for being the best performing school in the area.

Seboniso Boholo from the school was by far the most awarded matriculant and like Noordheuwel, he was called up on stage numerous times to collect his award. When he received his first award, he had a distinctive gate and thereafter was known as Seboniso ‘watch the movement’ Boholo.

With his last two awards, his mother who was later explained to have gone on camp with their school’s matriculants to assist with discipline ran up on stage with him as any proud mother would.

The West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) mayor, Mpho Nawa gave the boy and his mother R2 000 in cash on the spot after making an observation that the two were not as fortunate as the other pupils and parents who attended the event.

The programme Director, Max Maxeke made an appeal to all the business people at the event to assist a Zimbabwean-born matriculant with his studies as he more than met the requirements for funding but cannot access it due to not being a South African.

The treasurer general of ANC youth league stepped up to the plate and told the Zimbabwean matriculant that R100 000 will be available to him if he so much as asks. Another underdog, Rietvallei extension 5 secondary school got a 100 percent matric pass rate the very first year they had matrics

In all of the night’s happenings, the MEC of the Gauteng Department of Education, Panyaza Lesufi graced the event with his presence.
