The project is done in partnership with Bekkersdal social crime preventions and communications and the Gauteng Department of Community Safety.

The objective of the dialogue was to establish the Safer School Desk which has not yet been launched but these visits to schools in Bekkersdal are there to make room for the development thereof.

The Desk, when established, will be used as a means for schools to talk to the police about things they notice in their schools for the police to diffuse before matters gets worse and learners end up with a criminal record.

“It’s so unnecessary for learners to get a criminal record so we want to prevent that at all costs and start at the root of the problem to stop it from even happening,” Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal police said.

Public safety and police officers engaged in a dialogue with various learners from the school in order to explain the dangers of getting involved with gangsterism, drugs, carrying weapons, and bullying.

They also spoke to learners about striving to for a better future if they can only put their minds to it subsequently pamphlets were given out for careers in the police.

An official also shared a story about young men, some of which were from Bekkersdal, who turned their lives around after leaving their respective gangs and are now model citizens of South Africa.

The Bekkersdal police believe that a school is a place for learning and that the afore mentioned will not be tolerated.
