RHS crowned debating champs

Pupil: In Botswana you should not judge someone by reputation, only by personal experience.

Randfontein High School (RHS) were crowned champions of the Books Botswana Debating Championships held at the country’s University of Botswana from 18 to 22 December last year.

It’s said schools from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Lesotho, South Africa and Botswana competed for this sought after title.

Schools competed in several elimination rounds. RHS did not disappoint and three teams went through to the octofinals ( 8th finals). Two of those teams then breezed through to the semifinals where it came as a big surprise when they had to debate against each other. The two teams were an all boy and all girl team – Alpha and Beta teams.

The girl team won and went through to the finals where they competed against a private college. Their final topic of debate were, One currency for the whole African continent.

It was a tough debate, but head girl Ramasela Mashatola, Jasmin Olivier and Neo Tsotetsie pulled through and became the Books Botswana Debating Champions. Besides winning, Jasmin Olivier also learnt a great life lesson while in Botswana.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this. In Botswana you should not judge someone by reputation, only by personal experience,” she said.

Another pupil, Lurhan Maraba, won second place in the public speaking competition where he had one hour to prepare a speech about pitching a product to solve a global problem to multi billionaires.

Maraba outdid himself in his five minute speech and once again RHS could proudly return home, knowing they are the best of the best.

Public speaker Lurhan Maraba also made RHS very proud.
