‘We’re doing this for the children’

Two containers were donated to Carry You for an ECD to accommodate OR Thambo informal settlement.

Carryou Ministries set their sights on a new premises for an Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) as their Drop In Centre could not accommodate their numbers.

On Monday, 25 January Carryou posted pictures of the land they acquired to move on their blog in anticipation of the new crèche and park that will soon be introduced to the community. Two days later, the containers were delivered to the land. The containers are fully equipped with everything needed to run an ECD including a stove, fridge and extractor.

The containers, Brenda Naholo from Carryou said are the product of a donor from the United States who wishes not to be named. Carryou got in contact with the donor through a mutual acquaintance and before they knew it, their dreams were brought to fruition. The containers were made by the Bright Kid Foundation and have a colorful exterior which saves Carryou from any expense on making the containers look aesthetically pleasing.

The ECD will now mainly serve residents of OR Thambo informal settlement. Carryou chose the location because it is central to two informal settlements and before now there were no ECDs in the area. The centre will charge those who are able to pay but will be lenient on those who cannot.

Most of the people who live here can’t afford to pay but we’re doing this for the children. They have a right to education and we aren’t going to deny them that,” Naholo said.

Carryou is in the process of getting the ECD funded by the department of social development so that they don’t have to charge parents anything. “The business plan is already at social development. We’re waiting for approval now,” she said.

Brenda said the only downside to the ECD is that it will only be about to accommodate 50 children. She said she would appreciate if she could get more donors in order to help more children.
