Man arrested at taxi rank with unlicensed gun

Police: Firearm was found to belong to a woman in the Eastern Cape.

A 35-year-old man arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm belonging to a woman from the Eastern Cape was denied bail in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court, Bekkersdal Police said.

“It is alleged at around 11.45am on Friday, 22 January Sergeant Libudi Nong from the Bekkersdal intervention team was performing his normal crime prevention duties when he spotted a suspicious looking man hiding himself behind a bakkie that was parked at Bekkersdal taxi rank,” said Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

Nong approached the man and as he got closer to him, the man made a quick dash. He subsequently chased the man and managed to catch him.

The suspect was found to be in possession of a firearm that he could not account for. He was later taken to the Bekkersdal Police station where necessary enquiries were done and it was found the firearm belongs to a woman in the Eastern Cape who reported the weapon as lost or stolen.

The suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and appeared before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He was denied bail in the proceedings.
