Ringball courts pose a danger to players

Member: The court is a danger to players during matches.

The Randfontein Ringball Club has accomplished itself over all the years it has been in Randfontein but they now have to contend with a peeling and unkempt court.

The Ringball Club has been in Randfontein for over fifty years and the club has achieved so much in that time. Recently, the club toured to Namibia and received gold medals at their competition. Some of the players in the club are also Protea players and have done well to lift the name of the town up high.

When the Herald visited the club recently, it was apparent the courts were in a bad state. Around the court and inside were pieces of asphalt missing and those that were there were peeling away. Fred Page, a member of the club said the court is a danger to players during matches as one wrong step in this high-paced game could spell a disastrous injury.

Although the club is on municipal grounds, it is their responsibility to maintain the grounds.

The municipality has a contract with clubs in which we lease the space to them for a certain amount of time and we relinquish any responsibility to do maintenance,” said Tshidiso Tlharipe, Randfontein Executive Mayor spokesperson.

Page said the club had cable theft a while back. The issue was fixed but he had to do the welding of the poles to protect the wires henceforth himself. The club has dreams of re-doing the courts. Page said that he does just want the surfacing to be done, he would like the entire thing to be done over so that he knows it will last for a long time.

“Every time we save up for it, time goes by and it just gets more expensive,” Page said.

The club is thus crying out to businesses in Randfontein for sponsorships to get the court fixed. In addition to this, the club, which is well hidden behind Randmark Run Walk Cycle Club would also like their club to be more visible to the community. One of the ways they can achieve that is with a signboard outside the premises.

Should anyone be interested in sponsoring the club in any way, they can contact Page on 083 307 5531.
