Domestic worker fooled by thieves

The suspects pretended to call the owner of the home to gain access.

A domestic worker in Taaibos Street, Greenhills was the latest victim of a theft scam by criminals.

The incident took place at around 2pm on Monday, 25 January.

“It is alleged the woman was working in the house when three unknown men called at the gate. She went out to speak to the men who indicated they needed to enter the premises. The one man allegedly took out his cellphone and called the owner,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

The domestic worker subsequently opened the gate and two of the three men entered the premises while the third allegedly kept her busy at the gate. She later realised they entered the house and took jewelry from the house.

The Randfontein Police are issuing an alert to home owners and domestic workers to stay vigilant and not to be coerced into giving access to their properties.

“The woman in this instance was steadfast in refusing access but with a cunning ploy the criminals eventually gained access to the house. Criminals will use any means possible to access valuables,” Ernst said.

The police request that home owners are requested to sensitise their workers regarding these scams and to communicate beforehand if workmen or other people will visit their homes while they are out.
