R’fontein’s sewage woes soon to be gone

R5 million allocated to the refurbishment of the Waste Water Treatment Works.

Randfontein’s sewage woes will soon be at an end following R5 million being allocated to the municipality for the refurbishment of the Randfontein Waste Water Treatment Works (WTW).

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) through the Accelerated Infrastructure Program (ACIP) allocated the funds in order to improve the quality of the final effluent being discharged from the works. Effluent is the substance discharged from the sewage treatment facility into streams that is responsible for some of the stink in Randfontein.

The DWS appointed Rand Water to be the implementing agent of the project and they are therefore responsible for appointing the contractor or service provider to complete the project.

According to a memorandum from the Randfontein Local Municipality informing internal stakeholders of the project, it started at the end of November and will be completed by 31 March.

The municipality would like to make residents of Ward 9 where the sewage farm is located aware of the project and would like to apologise for the inconvenience it might cause with regards to the quality of the effluent.

They further warn residents not to use the effluent being discharged for any purpose until further notice. This would include water for cattle.
