UPDATE dog attack: Breed possibly a pit bull

When paramedics arrived they found him lying on the ground

The dog that attacked an elderly man leaving him in a critical condition is believed to be a pit bull.

The man, 90, was attacked in the Carletonville area on Thursday afternoon. When paramedics arrived they found him lying on the ground.

“It is understood the dog was a pit bull,” ER24 said in a statement on Friday.

Although this is the first known dog attack of the new year in Randfontein, the Herald reported on two serious incidents in 2015.

In May, a five-year-old boy was attacked by a dog when he visited a neighbour in Kocksvlei. The dog bit open the boy’s head. He had to be rushed to hospital.

In October, a Randfontein and Westonaria SPCA inspector escaped with her life after an angry boerbul had attacked and dragged her for approximately 20 metres.

According to Dogsbite.org from 2005 to 2014, pit bulls killed over 200 people in America.
