Man forced into car boot at gunpoint

Police urge residents not to park and sit in their cars as it creates an opportunity for crime to take place.

A man, 34, was robbed at gunpoint and forced into his boot earlier this month.

The armed robbery took place at about 8.50pm on Thursday, 7 January. The victim was allegedly seated in his car when an unknown person hit the door with a firearm, demanding entry to the vehicle.

The man allegedly refused to open the car’s doors when the suspect fired a shot that went through the bonnet of the car. With the shot that fired, the man was forced to unlock the doors and the suspect entered the vehicle and instructed the victim to drive.

The driver was later on forced into the boot of his vehicle. He was later found there. The suspect took cellphones from the vehicle and fled,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

“The victim did not sustain serious injuries. Randfontein Police management would like to make the residents aware it is dangerous to park and sit in vehicles. The criminal element in our town will take advantage of any situation which presents itself,” Ernst added.

Warrant Officer Bongani Mpete who is investigating the case would appreciate any information that might lead to the tracing of the suspect. Mpete can be contacted on 011 278 8100.
