Avoid these hijacking hotspots — Police

Police noticed a frequency in the amount of vehicles reported stolen.

The Randfontein Police are concerned about an increase of motor vehicle theft in town and subsequently released the town’s hotspots.

The police have implemented various strategies to curb this crime.

“It is also necessary to inform the residents of areas in which this type of crime is committed most frequently. Although theft of motor vehicles can occur anywhere, the following areas are considered hotspots and motorists should be more vigilant when parking in these areas,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Hotspot areas:

• Greenhills – The block formed by Kenneth, Convent, Northway and Greenhills Avenue.
• Randfontein CBD – Main Reef and Village Street as well as the block from 6th Street to the Randfontein Post Office.
• Homelake – Elaine Street and Kenneth Avenue.
• Randgate – Smuts and Union Streets.
• Helikonpark – Cormorant Streets.

“Any vehicle that is left unattended is a target and since vehicles are in most instances our second most valued possession, vehicle owners are requested to keep a close watch on their vehicles. If you are forced to park in an area which is not secure, in the street, or at a place where there is not ample lighting, motorists should constantly ensure that the vehicle is still there,” Ernst warned.
