Middle-aged man robbed at gunpoint in veld

Police: It is advised that pedestrians keep to well lit areas.

Randfontein Police are warning residents to avoid secluded areas after a middle-aged recently was robbed at gunpoint in a local veld.

The incident occurred at around 5.40pm on Wednesday 6 January.

“It is alleged the victim, 59, was walking across an open veld between the old home affairs offices and the Jan Viljoen Hostel when he was approached aggressively by three unknown men. One was armed with a firearm which he then pointed at the victim.

They instructed him to look down and then searched him. The suspects took his cellphone and his money. They then fled the scene on foot,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Randfontein Police are concerned about pedestrians that do not use safe avenues when walking, sometimes putting themselves at risk. This is but one incident which happened in a secluded area where there are nobody to come to a victim’s aid. It is advised that pedestrians keep to well lit areas where there are other activity and where you are not alone.

A case of armed robbery is being investigated by warrant officer Bongani Mpete.
