Adopt-A-Cop program to curb crime at schools

Bekkersdal Police: There are three reasons for our visit.

Bekkersdal Police this past week embarked on a three school visit as part of their back to school project.

The purpose of the visit is to introduce the Adopt-A-Cop initiative to schools; to revive school safety forums and to encourage pupils to report crime. The first school, Ipeleng Primary was visited on Wednesday morning followed by Kamogelo Intermediate later in the day and Zuurbekom Intermediate on Friday morning.

The Adopt-A-Cop initiative means that each school gets two policemen, one of them being a detective and the other doing visible policing. The responsibility of the policeman and detective is to liaise with the school.

The school will report any problems within the school directly to the policeman where a solution will be sought. There was about 500 pupils that was addressed at Zuurbekom Intermediate where Sergeant Linkie Lefakana introduced the key role players in the project.

Detective Sevha Shiviti and Major Elizabeth Mosia was nominated to be Zuurbekom’s adopted cops.

“These talks were very informative and the pupils were taught about safety in general, theft, bullying, gangsterism and drugs. Gauteng Community Safe Reggie Modiba and Constable Kamogelo Banda from Social Crime Prevention also was present,” said warrant officer, Ruben Ngewana, the sector manager of the area.

Detective Shiviti added, “It is a challenging project. There has been a previous incident of theft at the school, but I am happy to see they now have security at the gate.”
