Hitchhiker attacked and tied up

Police urge people not to hitchhike.

A 42-year-old man recently was the victim of a robbery while hitchhiking to work.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, “It is alleged the victim was standing next to the road at Cook Plant when an orange vehicle stopped next to him. The vehicle had three occupants inside and they offered him a lift.”

Ernst said the vehicle traveled a short distance when they had to pull over because the front passenger allegedly had to relieve himself. The passenger then went to the backdoor and pointed a firearm at the the hiker and demanded money and a cellphone.

“The suspect took his property and tied him up with his shoelaces. The vehicle then drove off,” said Ernst.

“The Randfontein Police urges people who not to hitchhike since they expose themselves to all sorts of dangers while standing next to the road.

If awaiting public transport, do not get into any person’s vehicle, because people you deem good Samaritans could just as well be seasoned criminals. Your safety should always come first,” she warned.
