Warning: Prepare for floods, SAWS says
South African Weather Service warns against possible floods in the area later today.
Floods could occur in Johannesburg over the course of the next six hours, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns on their website.
Johannesburg and the West Rand including Krugersdorp, Randfontein and Westonaria are at high risk, with SAWS predicting hazardous conditions in the next 24 hours. The areas are marked red on their maps, which are to indicate residents and local emergency management (EMS) should take action.
Joburg EMS has not been available to comment on whether they’re prepared for floods in the area.
For the rest of the day there is an 80 per cent chance of rain in Johannesburg, with expected rainfall of 30mm and an average temperature of 21ºC.
Wednesday through to Sunday SAWS predicts an average 60 per cent chance of rain, with expected rainfall between 10 and 20mm and average temperatures of between 19º and 23ºC.
Meanwhile the Free State, where a water crisis exists, a 60 per cent chance of rain is predicted for today with expected rainfall of 10mm and an average temperature of 26ºC. Midweek they’ll have 30 per cent chance of rain (expected rainfall of 3mm) and towards the weekend again a 60 per cent chance of rain (expected rainfall of 10mm).
