Man robbed at gunpoint after bank visit

Police: Withdrawing large amounts of money is risky.

Police strongly advise residents that if large amounts of money are to be paid, rather make use of electronic banking facilities.

This after a man in his late 40s was robbed at gunpoint shortly after he withdrew a substantial amount of money from a bank in the Randfontein CBD.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said the incident took place in Village Street at about 1.15pm on 31 December.

“It is alleged the victim, 47, was at a bank where he withdrew a substantial amount of money. The victim was on foot, walking from the bank with the money in a plastic bag. He allegedly was confronted in 7th Street by three unknown men.

The one pointed at the victim with a firearm and they took his wallet, cellular telephone and the plastic bag containing the money. They fled on foot”, said Ernst.

The police has been conducting awareness campaigns regarding the withdrawal of large amounts of cash throughout the festive season. It is advised that if large amounts of money are to be paid, rather make use of electronic banking facilities. Withdrawing large amounts of money is risky and it is heartbreaking that a lifetimes savings are gone in a few seconds. No one should start a new year in this way.
