Mother and child held at gunpoint

Security companies outwit suspect.

A mother and her 3-year-old child were held at gunpoint in a terrifying street robbery in Homelake on Monday.

The victim, Monica Masocha said she was walking to town when she was confronted by the suspect who held her up at gunpoint and demanded her cellphone and wallet.

I didn’t have money with me so I gave him my cellphone and coins. It was less than R10 in change,” said Masocha with her daughter on her back none-the-wiser about the incident.

Masocha then came across Riaan Snyman, a reaction officer at Mapogo Security who was quick to find the suspect.

“I got his description and I told her I’d look for him. I later saw him and the gun in his hand and chased him,” he said.

The suspect then jumped a wall and hid in the bushes in a house on Salie Street, Homelake with elderly occupants inside.

“I told backup to go around the back thinking that he would jump the back fence. When I went to the front we saw the guy in the front of the yard hiding in the bushes,” said Snyman.

The man was shortly after arrested by Emile Rothman from EPR who later got on scene as the home was an EPR client.

Snyman, Leo Landman, and Schalk Joubert from Mapogo all assisted in the arrest. Gerald King, managing director of Mapogo personally came out to the scene to congratulate his men and to see everything go smoothly.

The Randfontein Police speedily arrived on scene and took the suspect away. While police walked the suspect out, he said to the two elderly women who were in the house at the time, “Jammer oor jou yard, Tannie.”

Comment is still awaited from the police.
