SOS officer recovers captain’s vehicle

On arrival he found a grey Atos parked on the grass, extremely close to a residents wall.

On Wednesday, 6 January, Special Operation Solution (SOS) reaction officer Stephen Gerhardi recovered a stolen vehicle belonging to Captain Hendrik Rothman from the Randfontein Police.

At about 8.50am, Gerhardi received a call about a suspicious car parked in Tier Street. He found a grey Atos parked on the grass, extremely close to a residence’s wall.

He did some research on the licence plate and found the car had not been reported stolen, and that there was no change of ownership. On closer inspection, he found the car door and bonnet open. The glove compartment’s handle was broken off, and CDs and documents were scattered on the seats.

He saw wires hanging from underneath the steering wheel, and the ignition was still on. He reported it to the Randfontein Police and one of their officers discovered a municipal bill with the details of the vehicle’s owner. A police member went to the home of the owner in Kudu Street, where Rothman’s wife confirmed that it was their vehicle.

His wife said their son, who sometimes drives the vehicle, had parked it at about 10pm the night before. They never even noticed that the car was missing, only that the gates were open. The Rothman family thanked Gerhardi for recovering their stolen vehicle and for his outstanding service in the community.
