Parentless child goes to school

Less fortunate Grade 1 gets late Christmas gift.

A less fortunate grade 1 got a late Christmas gift from a local company to get him ready for the 2016 school year.

Boeta Smit, a Laerskool Rapportryer (Rappies) grade 1 was worried about going to school because he did not have the necessary stationary.

Boeta’s mother passed away at birth and he began living with his grandmother and grandfather. His grandfather then also passed away at a public hospital and the family believes it to be as a result of negligence.

After the death of his grandfather he and his grandmother, Amanda Smit, has been struggling to make ends meet. Amanda’s car recently gave in and is currently in for repairs leaving them to walk wherever they need to be.

I walk about 2,4km everyday to work. I mean, I’m still fine to do it even though my age is against me but he isn’t – especially in this heat,” she said.

The week before school started, Amanda said she had just about a few crayons, some pencils, one pair of pants and a shirt.

After hearing about the situation, Cartridge Cave volunteered to donate a Rappies stationary hamper as well as a school bag to Boeta so that he does not have to feel awkward going back to school.

Rison Woodcock from Cartridge Cave humbly said, “It is a privilege for us to give back to the community. This is our way of saying thank you to Randfontein for all their support. We also wish Boeta well for the coming school year.”

The hamper was handed over to Boeta on Thursday, 7 January and he was over the moon to have new stationary and even more so for his new wrestling-themed school bag. His grandmother who was equally excited could not hold back her tears and would like to thank Cartridge Cave and everyone who made the sponsorship possible for giving them a helping hand.
