First petrol price adjustment of 2016 announced

Adjusted fuel prices will no doubt help the pockets of those in diesel vehicles.

The Department of Energy released their first adjustment of fuel prices for the new year which will be effective from Wednesday, 6 January.

South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, informed by international and local factors.

The wholesale price of diesel 0.05 percent sulphur and 0.005 percent sulphur will decrease by 76 cents a litre and 78 cents a litre respectively. The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will decrease by 63 cents per litre and the single maximum national retail price (SMNRP) will decrease by 84 cents per litre with effect from 6 January.

The pump price of petrol 95 Octane will decrease by 3 cents per litre and that of 93 Octane will remain unchanged with effect from 6 January.

The maximum retail price of liquid petroleum gas (LPGas) will increase by 45 cents per kilogram. The main reasons for these fuel price adjustments are the weakening of the Rand against the US Dollar despite the drop in the prices of all petroleum products during the period under review.

The Minister of Energy, Tina Joemat-Pettersson has approved the adjustments to some of the pricing elements of the maximum retail price structure of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPGas).

The maximum retail margin of LPGas will increase by 50 cents per kilogram with effect from 6 January.
