Young man arrested for illegal firearm

Police: We found a revolver hidden underneath a pillow.

A man in his 20s has been arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Venterspos, Westonaria Police said.

The suspect, 25 years of age, was arrested at 9.40am on Sunday, 27 December in Carleton Road.

“The Westonaria Police received a tip-off of stolen property hidden in a certain house in Venterspos. The police then proceeded to the alleged house and on arrival they found the suspect and asked to search his room. Whilst searching, they found a revolver hidden underneath a pillow.

When the police asked the suspect to produce the license for the firearm, the suspect failed in doing so. The suspect was then arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The suspect already appeared before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday (29 December) but the matter was postponed. The suspect remained in custody until Saturday, 2 January,” said Captain Siphiwe Ndlovu, spokesperson of Westonaria Police.

The Westonaria Police management congratulated the officers for recovering the unlicensed firearm, arresting the suspect and thanked the community for being the eyes and ears of the police.

Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, the station commander for the Westonaria Police added, “The fact that the firearm is not licensed, is an indication it was intended to be used in the commission of a crime.”
