Police stick to their promise

Police: One missing child was found and we managed to arrest persons selling counterfeit goods.

As promised, there was a heavy police presence at shopping malls over the festive and holiday season. 

The festive season or holiday season as it is also called is the period from late November to early January.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for Randfontein Police said, “Randfontein Police did not hesitate to show their commitment to this promise when they flooded the CBD at the start of the business day on Monday, 21 December. Randfontein members assembled at Village Square Mall where they conducted their parade.

“Members were divided into three groups who were conducting foot patrol duties throughout the CBD. This included all the streets and shops in the block from Village Square Mall to 2nd Street and Main Reef Road to Station Mall.”

Although it is an awareness campaign about crimes at shopping malls and other areas that the public visit frequently over this period, police members were also on hand to deal with any criminality. Members conducted stop and search operations and also interacted with shoppers and pedestrians. They distributed safety information leaflets to educate the public on how to protect themselves and their property.

The shoppers were also advised to keep a close eye on their children when they visited shopping malls. They had to point out the security staff to them and tell them to ask only those people for help if they became lost.

Parents have to ensure their children knew their cell phone numbers so that security staff could call them. One missing child was even recovered during the patrolling of the Village Square Mall and reunited with the mother. Other successes include the arrest of persons selling counterfeit goods and illicit cigarettes.

Shoppers also were advised to double-check their cars after locking them before they walked off. They also were advised to put valuable items in the boot of their cars where they were out of sight. The initiative was endorsed by the Management of Village Square Mall and all business owners expressed their appreciation for the increased visibility.

Randfontein Police Management wishes to extend their appreciation towards Francois du Buisson, Village Square Centre Manager for his hospitality during the day.
